The first two lines of this poem mean that the noble Shusun family in the State of Lu held the actual power of the State of Lu. His coachman actually captured a unicorn and broke its left front leg. The Shusun family did not recognize that the captured unicorn was an auspicious divine beast and discarded it outside the city walls. Confucius was sad that the destiny of the State of Lu could not be reversed.
